A blog can be a fantastic tool for companies that want to increase traffic to their website, share their expertise or connect with customers, yet many business owners are not sure where to start or how to properly maintain a blog.
1. Start Your Blog Off Right
Consider who your blogging goals. Do you want to attract visitors? Will these visitors be potential customers? Really think about who your current and potential audience will be and create a brainstorm list of issues they face that are related to your business. You will use these later when creating your editorial calendar.
2. Keep it Going, Stay Consistent
One of my biggest issues with business blogs is finding that a business you like has a blog but it hasn’t been updated since 2009. How often should you update? Once a month will be the absolute least you should update, but don’t except great traffic from your blog. Once a week is much better (it is what I strive for) and will allow to gain momentum. Once a day is the best, but not realistic for most companies.
Creating an editorial calender of post will help you to stay on track, you have to consider it an important part of your marketing efforts so that it doesn’t fall to the bottom of your to-do list. Vary your post types as you should be with other social media. Use images, tips, short posts, interviews, long posts etc.
3. Promote Properly
If you are writing a blog you should also be promoting it! You have the content to draw visitors but you have to leverage it. Share each post across all your social media and sharing sites, such as Stumbleupon.
Email! If you are not actively using email marketing, now that you have a blog there is no reason not to. Use your blog as a source of inspiration and start collecting email addresses!
