Hmmm, working from home, building a business and generating awesome income online. While it sounds like a dream to some it is simply a reality to others. On super cold Winter mornings, while others are scraping their car windows, I am so exceedingly grateful that I chose to start a business online. So how do you know if it’s for you? How do you know if you have what it takes to strike out on your own and start an online business that will bring you income and peace of mind? I’ve pinpointed some qualities that I feel are required for starting a business online – many of these things can be taught but the main point is that you make the decision and then go for it!
You have some time to spare. This could be as little time as replacing your nightly TV watching. It could be as much time as you are between jobs and don’t have kids kinda time. I started my business while I worked part time and had 3 kids 6 and under – if you really want to do it you will find the time is there.
You have motivation/passion. You want to work at home, you want to own your own business, you want to make a pile of cash. Whatever the reason make sure that it’s there and make sure that you are passionate about it. My business was born out of my determination to stay at home with my kids and generate income. I tried the work outside of the home thing and it just wasn’t for me. I still had a passion for helping people that I needed to fulfill, so my virtual assistant business was born out of the combination of the 2.
You have determination/ willpower. If you are working for yourself from home you still need to work. If you would rather binge watch Netflix you need to have the willpower to just say no – I’m building a business here, f-off Netflix! Of course one of the fringe benefits of working from home is that is you really give it all you got for 6 hours of the day it’s ok to take a little Netflix break every now and then.
You have a little tech knowledge/ are willing to learn. If you made it to this blog post you have the potential to have an online business. Basic knowledge of how to navigate the web and handle email are really all you need. The rest can be learned, if you are willing to do what you can to understand this beast of online business then you likely have what it takes to succeed. Of course online courses, such as The Inspire Planning Academy always help. Alternatively if you are super techy consider developing a product that you can sell online or offering your services up as a consultant.
You have a product or service that you can start to sell immediately. I’ll be honest starting an online business is a lot easier when you actually have a business idea. Do you currently have a retail store? Great, take it online to increase sales. Do you do consulting or coaching work? Get online to start to expand your service area. Do you have office experience? Consider opening up a virtual assistant business and specializing in a niche that you are already familiar with or that you are willing to take training on. You may also want to think about teaching something. What is it that you do amazingly well? Can you package it into an e course, book or similar?
You have grit. This goes for any business, not just online business. You need to be able to bounce back when things don’t go your way and you need to be willing to pivot and change things up that aren’t working. I’m a girly girl and I think it is totally ok to be sad sometimes, but you need to be able to suck it up and keep moving!
You’re independent. I’m am a total introvert, so I have always loved to do things on my own. I am self-reliant for motivation and know the next steps to take, and I’m confident in my choice. If it’s not the right choice, I accept that and move on always knowing that I am responsible for my own life. If you are more of a extroverted or look to others for guidance, it is a good idea to join networking groups both online and off so you still get that communication and face time that you crave. Otherwise you may become resentful of working from home.
