I walk into Walmart and without fail run into that person, usually when my hair hasn’t been washed in 2 days and there is a large coffee stain on my shirt and without a doubt I am rushing because I am late for an appointment that I forgot about. And there she is, hair perfect, outfit smashing and looking as though she hasn’t a care in the world. How does she do that? What is she doing that I am not?
Well, a lot actually. I did some research and was able to come up with quite a few common factors for what successful people do in the morning. Below are my top 5.
#1 They Wake Up Early
This one is probably the hardest for me because I am a serial snooze button hitter. It’s always been my way to hit the snooze button until the absolute last minute and then I end up running late. But studies show that you are doing yourself a great disservice with this because you are starting your sleep cycle all over again, but not allowing your body to fully submerse in it. This in turn leaves you feeling groggy and drug out for the rest of the day. Solution: Why don’t you try setting your alarm half an hour earlier, putting the clock across the room so you have to actually get out of bed to turn it off and are therefore not tempted to hit the snooze button. Do this for a week and you have just added 2 and a half hours of productive time to your work week as well as a bonus for your brain.
#2 They Exercise Before It Falls Off Their To-Do List
Remember that extra half hour you just gave yourself by following my advice above? Why don’t you use that to give your body a boost? The experts say that by exercising in the morning, you are increasing mental acuity on top of boosting your metabolism for the day. Don’t worry; you don’t have to run a marathon before breakfast. A simple yoga practice or a brisk walk with your dog is all you need to get the juices flowing for the day.
#3 They Eat Breakfast
We know it’s the most important meal of the day….but why? Eating breakfast when you wake up regulates your insulin levels and your sugars, which in turn gives your brain a boost and starts your metabolism off right. It also ensures that you are not running on empty, because when you deprive your body of food, you are depriving it of fuel for the day. A quick healthy breakfast will do wonders with helping you clear the cobwebs from morning brain and give you the energy you need to keep going for the day.
#4 They Read
Some read the newspaper, some read the novel they can’t put down, some read the back of the cereal box, but successful people read. Like Dr. Seuss said “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.” Start your morning of by relaxing with a book or the paper and feed your brain as well as your belly.
#5 They Meditate/Relax/Appreciate
Productive people take a moment to ground themselves in the morning. They take a minute to find their center, find their purpose and find their drive. Meditation allows you to clear the clutter so you can start your day with a blank page and an open mind, leaving behind all the negative garbage from the day before. Others find that writing down 3 things they are thankful for gives them the solid base to start the day off right. And by writing them down you are both invigorating the morning brain as well as visually acknowledging what is good in your life which stimulates the happy centers in your brain.
So there, you have gotten up early without the snooze button, had a healthy breakfast with your favorite book followed by a brisk walk with Fido and you took 10 minutes to meditate before you head out the door. How do you feel? Like you can conquer the world? Because you should. You have just done your brain and body so many favors that you will be amazed that it took you this long to figure this out. You are well on your way to success my friend.
